What to keep an eye out for – The duct system is a vital part of your whole HVAC system. If you have a leaky ducts it can cost money in terms of higher energy bills, but it can also be a health risk to you and your household as untreated air from the attic and small crevices in your home can breed contaminants that can cause illness.
How to spot obvious leaks – You can spot obvious leaks by streaks of dirt at cross points, or vacant spaces where the duct system enters or exits the air conditioning unit (or furnace).
Can I Do Duct Cleaning Myself?
Combine one part household cleaner (bleach), with three parts water for a cleaning mixture. Have zip ties handy as well; cloth rags, mastic, a screwdriver and a small paintbrush.
Remove the inner and outer liners from the duct connectors at the air conditioning unit and at the ceiling or wall. Soak the cleaning rags in the solution and wring them out to get rid of excess water.
Reaching as far as you can, wipe the inner liners with the damp rags.
Once you have cleaned as much of the duct as you possibly can, apply a light layer of mastic over the duct connector and place the inner liner back over the metal connector. Using a plastic zip tie, secure the inner liner onto the duct connector.
Finally, pull the insulation and outer liner over the duct connector. Using another zip tie, secure the outer liner and insulation in place. Add a second layer of mastic over the outer liner of the duct. Continue cleaning the individual ducts as necessary. You may also vacuum inside the duct as far back as you can reach.
